WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- As part of final preparations for the Northwest Conference Championships, the Whitman College cross country teams are hosting their annual Blue-Gold 3K Team Time Trial races this Saturday, Oct. 24, on the Martin Field track near Borleske Stadium.

  Kristen Ballinger
         Matt Kelly

The women's 3,000-meter race starts at about 9:30 a.m. with the men's race to follow soon thereafter.

The Blue-Gold event gets its name because the coaching staff divides the men's and women's rosters into two evenly matched teams. Team scoring adds a friendly bit of competition to the races.

Fans are welcome to root for their favorites, or to run in the races themselves.

A number of staff and faculty have run in the event in recent years.

Runners interested in racing in Saturday's event are asked to contact either head coach Malcolm Dunn or assistant coach Neal Christopherson.

Kristen Ballinger, a junior, is the defending champion in the women's race. Matthew Kelly, a senior, was the first to cross the finish line in the men's race last year.

The NWC championships are set for Saturday, Oct. 31, at McIver Park near Estacada, Ore.
