WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Justin Artis, a junior on the Whitman College men's basketball team, has been named Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
Artis, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, averaged 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 steals as Whitman swept a series of three games last week in California.

With Artis contributing 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, Whitman opened its California swing last Tuesday with a 78-63 victory at Cal Tech. He added 12 points and five steals the next night in an 86-69 victory at West Coast Baptist.
Artis had his best all-around game in last Saturday's 94-93 win at Redlands. He made a pair of 3-pointers en route to 17 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Under second-year coach Eric Bridgeland, Whitman is off to its best start in a decade with a 4-2 win-loss record. As part of a balanced offensive and defensive attack, Artis is averaging 11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Artis is one of five Missionaries scoring in double figures in the first six games. Junior Daniel Davidson leads the way at 12.7 points per game with sophomore Brandon Shaw close behind at 12.3. Freshmen LuQuam Thompson and Peter Clark are averaging 12.2 and 11.8 points, respectively.
As a team, Whitman is scoring 88.7 points per game, which tops the Northwest Conference. The Missionaries also lead the NWC in steals (14.17 per game), turnover margin (+9.3), and offensive rebounds (19.33 per game).
Adding to Whitman's offensive firepower are sophomore David Michaels (8.8 ppg), freshman Drew Raher (8.0 ppg) and freshman Brady Brent (6.3 ppg).
Artis, a graduate of Foss High School in Tacoma, Wash., played his first two collegiate seasons at Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash.
Whitman hosts its annual Alumni Game at 4 p.m. this Saturday and then continues its non-conference schedule when it welcomes the University of California-Santa Cruz to Sherwood Center on Saturday, Dec. 12. That game tips off at 7:30 p.m. on George Ball Court.
