Erin Pettersen, a senior captain on the women's swim team, is making Whitman athletic history this week.

Pettersen is the first Whitman swimmer to qualify for the NCAA national championships since the college made its transition from the NAIA in 1995.

She is racing today (Thursday) in her first event, the 50-yard freestyle, on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Her two strongest events, the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly, are set for Friday and Saturday.
