WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With most of its students away from campus on semester break, Whitman College is offering free admission to the local community for this weekend's basketball games at Sherwood Center.

The Whitman women's and men's teams open Northwest Conference play when they host Pacific University on Friday. George Fox University is Saturday's opponent.

The women's games start both nights at 6 p.m. The men's games follow at 8 p.m.

Coach Michelle Ferenz and the Whitman women, 8-1 to start the season, are ranked No. 23 nationally in NCAA Div. III, according to a pair of national polls. The Pacific women's team has struggled to a 1-7 start, but the George Fox women are 9-0 and ranked No. 19 and No. 24 in the two national polls.

The Whitman men's squad, under first-year coach Eric Bridgeland are off to a 3-5 start and will be playing its first home games of the season. The Pacific men are 5-3 while the George Fox men are 4-5.

The George Fox teams play Friday at Whitworth in Spokane before coming to Walla Walla for Saturday's games.
