WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Ysbrand Nusse, a junior captain on the Whitman College men's swim team, has been named Northwest Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week.
Nusse, a graduate of Henry Gunn High School in Palo Alto, Calif., sparked the Missionary men to a pair of NWC dual meet victories last weekend in western Oregon. He won each of the four different individual races he entered, and he also swam legs on two of Whitman's victorious relay teams.
In last Friday's 153-542 victory over Willamette University in Salem, Nusse won both the 400-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle. Meanwhile, his younger brother Jamie Nusse, a Whitman freshman, won 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. The two brothers also teamed with senior Clint Collier and sophomore David Lee for a decisive triumph in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Ysbrand Nusse posted two more individual event wins on Saturday as Whitman cruised to a 141-49 dual meet victory over Lewis & Clark College in Portland. Nusse finished first in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, and he anchored Whitman's winning effort in the 400-yard individual medley.
The Whitman men's team is now 3-2 in the NWC dual meet season.
The Missionary men and women host a pair of dual meets this weekend. Whitman battles Whitworth University in an NWC dual at 5 p.m. Friday. A non-conference meet with College of Idaho is set for 2 p.m. Saturday. Both competitions take place at the Paul Harvey Pool in the Baker Ferguson Fitness Center.
