WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Chris Faidley, a Whitman College senior guard, has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
Faidley averaged 29 points and 7.0 rebounds as Whitman split a pair of games at last weekend's San Antonio (Texas) Shootout.
He hit eight 3-pointers and scored 36 points in 37 minutes in Whitman's 91-87 Friday night victory over Olivet College. He had 22 points and eight rebounds Saturday night as the Missionaries let a 35-28 lead slip away in a 71-61 loss to Trinity University, the tournament's host team.
Faidley, who made 10 of 20 3-point attempts in the two games, was named the tourney's Most Outstanding Player. One of his teammates, freshman Brandon Shaw, also was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Four games into the season, Faidley leads the NWC in scoring at 24.5 points per game. He is averaging 4.5 3-point baskets an outing, which also tops the conference. A year ago, Faidley averaged an NWC-best 22.4 points per game.
His 58 points over the weekend also moved Faidley into eighth place on Whitman's all-time career scoring list. His career scoring total now stands at 1,307 points. He passed 1958 graduate Bob Becker, who scored 1,255 points at Whitman.
Max Johnson, a 1959 graduate, is No. 7 on Whitman's career scoring list with 1,354 points.
The Whitman men's team heads to California's University of Redlands later this week to play three tournament games. The Missionaries face Chapman University at 6 p.m. Thursday in their tourney opener.
