Shooting a 7-over par 79 in Sunday's second round, Whitman freshman Brian Barton finished in a four-way tie for 16th as the men's Northwest Conference Spring Classic wrapped up a two-day run at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore.

Barton's 36-hole score of 160 left Barton just three strokes out of 11th place. Whitman placed seventh in the team scoring with a 681 total for its top four golfers in each of the two rounds. The Missionaries finished just two strokes back of sixth-place Willamette.

Paul De Barros, a Whitman sophomore, shot his second consecutive 85 on Sunday to finish at 170. Others contributing to the Whitman team score were freshman Noah Jolley, whose second-round 88 left him at 172, and sophomore Grant Brandal, who carded an 89 on Sunday for a 179 total.

Jared Burns, a Whitman junior, dropped his second-round score by 14 strokes, shooting 96 on Sunday to finish at 206. Kyle Buckingham, a junior team captain, missed the tournament because of illness.

Pacific was a clear-cut winner in the team scoring with a 592. Whitworth and Linfield were second and third, respectively, with 614 and 618 totals. Pacific's Max Bonk took medalist honors with a 3-under par 141, beating runner-up and teammate Taryn Braseth by six strokes.

Whitman travels to Yakima, Wash., next Sunday for an 18-hole match against four other NWC schools at the Apple Tree Golf Course. The NWC championships will be played on that course April 19-20.
