Brian Barton and Sydney Saito, two Whitman first-year players, both placed sixth as the Northwest Conference northern colleges held their men's and women's fall tournaments Sunday and Monday at the Oakbrook Country Club in Lakewood, Wash.

The two tournaments, originally scheduled for 36 holes, were shortened to 27 holes. Heavy rains on Sunday limited that day's competition to just nine holes.

After shooting 39 in Sunday's rainy nine holes, Barton fired a 6-over par 77 on Monday to finish at 116. Whitworth senior Jordan Carter took medalist honors with a 110.

Saito, who struggled in posting a 48 in Sunday's rain, bounced back on Monday with an 86, one of the day's best 18-hole scores on the women's side. Whitworth's Krystal Pitkonon had Monday's best score (84) and finished second overall with a 129 total. Puget Sound's Sarah Bicker won the women's competition with a 128 total for 27 holes.

Saito was the only player competing for the Whitman women.

Paul De Barros, a Whitman sophomore, shot 38 on Sunday and 82 on Monday for a 120 total, good for an eighth-place tie. Others competing for the Missionary men were senior Dean Peterson (46-91-137), sophomore Grant Brandal (48-89-137) and junior Jared Burns (53-93-146).

Whitworth was first in the men's team scoring with a 458 total for its top four golfers on each day of the competition. Puget Sound was second at 467, Pacific Lutheran third at 472, and Whitman fourth at 510.

Whitworth also was first in the women's team scoring with a 520. Puget Sound (541) and Pacific Lutheran (571) were second and third.
