Sydney Saito, a first-year player, was Whitman's only entry as the Northwest Conference Women's Fall Golf Classic got underway Saturday in cold, windy conditions at the Wildhorse Resort Golf Course in Mission, Ore.

With light rain showers also falling at times, Saito shot 94 for the tournament's host school.

Pacific's Kelly Hartley fired a 9-over par 81 to finish atop the first-day leaderboard. Three other players -- Linfield's Brynn Hurdus, Whitworth's Kaylin Carlson and Pacific Lutheran's Angela Grossklaus -- were one shot back of the leader.

Pacific took the first-day lead in the team scoring with a 343 for its top four golfers. Whitworth was five shots back in second place. Other team scores were George Fox 367, Linfield 374, Pacific Lutheran 378, Puget Sound 380, and Willamette 441.

Lewis & Clark also had just one golfer in the field.

The tournament concludes Sunday with a second round of 18 holes.
