WALLA WALLA, Wash.-- A program of American composers featuring the American premiere of a new work by renowned local composer John David Earnest will highlight a Whitman College faculty recital Sunday, Oct. 24.

The recital begins at 3 p.m. in Chism Recital Hall, Hall of Music, 137 S. Park Street, Whitman College campus, and participants include Whitman musicians and professors Lee D. Thompson, Edward Dixon, Susan Pickett, Robert Bode and Laural Miller-Klein. There is no admission fee.

In the first half of the performance Dixon and Thompson will play a piece for cello and piano by Halsey Stevens, Pickett and Thompson will perform a piece for violin and piano by John David Earnest, and all will perform two Amy Beach compositions.

The second half of the recital will be devoted to the American premiere of John David Earnest’s Piano Concerto #2, in which Bode will conduct and Thompson will solo. This concerto was written for Thompson and Bode, who commissioned it from Earnest a year ago. Bode and Thompson performed the piece last May with the Sinfonia Bucharest in Bucharest, Romania, where it was “very well received,” according to Thompson.

“It is a delightful, three-movement work for solo piano with string orchestra and harp. It is a bright and positive, exciting piece that I thoroughly enjoy playing,” he said.
