WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College is again ranked in the top 50 national liberal arts colleges according to U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2003" guidebook.

The "liberal arts colleges - bachelor's" category, to which Whitman belongs, comprises the nation's 217 liberal arts colleges that emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the liberal arts. These colleges include the nation's best liberal arts colleges.

The top tier this year is made up of the top 52 colleges of the 217 in this category. Ranking 40th, Whitman College has the highest ranking among colleges of its kind in the Northwest (Willamette University of Salem, Oregon, the second ranked Northwest college in this category, is tied for 50th.)

Among the criteria in which Whitman ranked highly are percent of classes with fewer than 20 students (68 percent), graduation rate (over 80 percent), freshman retention rate (92 percent), and faculty-student ratio (1:10).
