Whitman names new director of alumni relations

1983 graduate returns to campus

Polly Campbell Powers, '83, has been named director of alumni relations at Whitman College.

Powers, who assumed her new responsibilities December 1, came to Whitman from Norfolk, Virginia, where she served as administrative coordinator for the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association since 1997. In that post, in addition to overseeing general office operations, she planned and organized continuing legal education programs and other events.

From 1991 to 1996, Powers worked for the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis, Missouri, as an assistant program manager in the community affairs department. She helped manage the company's million-dollar United Way Campaign and coordinated the Employee Volunteer Network for the company, among other responsibilities.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Powers transferred to Whitman College as a sophomore and majored in sociology. She worked four years for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services as a financial services specialist, and she was an assistant supervisor with the Baltimore County Department of Aging before joining the Ralston Company.

Powers has written and edited various newsletters as part of her professional duties, and she also spent a year as an editorial assistant with the Journal of Gerontology.

She has volunteered for organizations ranging from the American Red Cross to the Christian Service Homeless Shelter, and she has served as vice president of the Corporate Volunteer Council of Greater St. Louis.
