Your Health

Health insurance system in the U.S. is very complex even for Americans. We ask you to pay particular attention to information that you receive regarding international student health insurance. Generally, the policy our students use is very generous and comprehensive but it is very important that the rules are being followed and correct paperwork is submitted.

Health resources on campus: Welty Student Health Center

Our Health Center is staffed throughout the academic year Monday through Friday. Professional nurses are here to assist with students health care needs,t o examine ill or injured students, provide consultations or physical exams. Urgent or emergency medical care may be provided by local clinics or emergency rooms.

International student health insurance information

Most international students carry the required Lewermark health insurance plans. Exemptions are rare.

Why do you need health insurance? In the U.S. your physical health and financial health are closely related.

Whitman does not offer a domestic student health insurance plan.

We strongly recommend that all students are aware of their benefits, including the limitations and requirements of their particular health insurance. We provide multiple health insurance sessions throughout academic year and as a part of new student orientation. Join these to refresh your health insurance knowledge.

Mental health services

According to numerous research, international students are much more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental maladies. This is partially results from the stress of being away from home.

At the same time international students do not seek mental help when they need it due to various cultural barriers.

If you are experiencing stress and anxiety that is difficult to cope with, you are not alone. In fact, between 1/3 and 2/3 of students report mental health disorders of various types and severity during their college career. Whitman College provides two resources to international students:
