Dear Members of the Whitman Community,

I am writing today to provide some new information about what the rest of this academic year may look like and to clarify travel expectations moving forward.

As a result of yesterday’s proclamation by Governor Jay Inslee, we have made the decision to keep classes online through the remainder of the semester. The proclamation does allow for specialized labs and as stated previously, we will work with faculty and staff to provide limited access to those resources when possible, especially as we work with seniors who need credits for graduation.

We know that for students, the decision to stay online for the remainder of the semester may change your thinking about whether you want to stay on campus. We want to be very clear about our expectations as you make this decision.

Following spring break, if you plan to stay in Walla Walla, you should not travel, even regionally, for the remainder of the semester. If you plan to leave Walla Walla, you should not return until these restrictions are lifted.

This language is stronger than what we have said in the past and that is because the situation continues to evolve. You should know that we anticipate that social and co-curricular gatherings (OP trips, Greek functions, study breaks, club events, etc.) will be extremely curtailed in order to maintain appropriate social distancing.

If you are still uncertain if you should stay or go, and you have a safe place away from campus to be, we recommend that you leave. We will continue to provide support for students who need to stay.

While we don’t believe that we will be able to prevent all cases of coronavirus from reaching our own community, these measures are vital to minimizing the impact from a public health perspective. We need to take responsibility not only for our own health but also for the health of each other by not taking unnecessary risks. The student handbook sets the expectation that students will act responsibly in ways that reflect consideration and respect for others. We believe this is especially important as we react to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since many students have made the decision to return home, the college has decided to offer prorated credits for room and board. Additionally, the college will provide prorated credits for students living in college-owned rental houses. These credits will be applied to your account for the fall 2020 semester. Credit will be determined based on the percentage of the semester remaining and will exclude the percentage covered by Whitman need and merit-based aid. This amount will be different for each student. Students that leave campus should expect communication later this spring regarding their credit.

Given that the situation has been changing rapidly and the fact that many of you have left for spring break already, we want to be flexible so you can think through your plans. However, you must make your decision by this Friday, March 20, clearly indicate it to us on the post-spring break travel form, and follow the guidelines outlined above.

I am saddened that we are in the position of making these difficult decisions. Thank you for helping us create a safe campus for all members of our community during this extremely challenging time.
