Most biology requires a working knowledge of chemistry. In fact, one could say that the language of biology is chemistry. For Biological Principles, Biology 111, you need to have a rudimentary level of chemical knowledge, a level covered in the first semester of college-level chemistry and co-registration in the second semester of college-level chemistry. However, since The Biological World, Biology 112, does not cover the molecular areas of biology, you do not need a chemistry background. To complete the major requirements, the Biology Faculty feels you should have at least a year and a half of chemistry for a biology major; more if you wish to major in the molecular areas of biology (physiology, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, developmental biology). Please see a member of the Department if you have questions about the chemistry requirements for the major.
