ASWC Sound and Lights offers full-service technical production for a variety of campus events, including dances, speakers, concerts, and more.
Buildings and Grounds Governing Board
Two students sit on the Buildings and Grounds Governing Board to provide perspective on significant, long-term initiatives concerning structures, renovation, and upkeep. These students represent their peers in meetings with the Whitman College Board of Trustees.
Fine Arts House (FAH)
Affiliated with the art department, the FAH houses up to eight students and one resident assistant who plan and run programming that emphasizes studio art, theatre and music.
The Organic Garden grows annual and perennial vegetables, fruits and herbs, using no chemical pesticides and improving soil fertility with compost. Students weed and plant the garden and care for egg-laying chickens in the adjacent coop.
Located on the first floor of Olin, the Sheehan Gallery features two outside exhibits and two student showcases each year. Students can submit pieces to the Winter Art Salon and often work in the gallery.
Curated by students, the Stevens Gallery in Reid Campus Center provides a public art installation space open to any member of the Whitman community.
Three appointed students work alongside the Campus Sustainability Coordinator to advise the college on projects and policy changes.

Downtown Walla Walla Foundation
This organization preserves the culture, history, and commerce of downtown Walla Walla. Volunteers help with various historical tasks throughout the year as well as website management, newsletter articles, and poster distribution.
This organization works with government agencies, private entities, and the public to promote sustainability (ecological, equitable, and economical) in the community. One of Walla Walla 2020's areas of focus is developing a community with a strong center that respects its heritage by rehabilitating and renovating downtown.

AAUW Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue or are enrolled in full-time study at accredited U.S. institutions through a designated degree program in which women's participation traditionally has been low.
Anchorage Urban Fellows
Anchorage Urban Fellows is a nine-month program that places dynamic college graduates in some of Anchorage's most significant civic institutions. Fellows are supported by a team of well-connected members of the Anchorage community who help fellows integrate into the Anchorage community. Fellows are housed in the South Addition district of Anchorage adjoining downtown and the city's outdoor and cultural hubs.
City Hall Fellows
City Hall Fellows offers a systemic solution to the leadership crisis threatening American cities. The program provides recent college graduates with firsthand experience in local government as an apprenticeship in leadership for social change. Fellows participate in a structured, year-long, quasi-academic exploration of a particular city and how it operates, including intensive pro bono consulting projects by which fellows practice policy evaluation and policy-making. Fellows work on high-need government-run initiatives in cities where they have personal ties as full-time special project assistants for a senior local government administrator or official. Participating cities include Baton Rouge, Houston and San Francisco.
Cultural Vistas Fellowship
Cultural Vistas provides opportunities for underrepresented U.S. university students to advance their career goals, develop global competencies and experience life in another culture. The program includes an eight-week summer internship in Argentina, Germany or India. Academic or practical experience in sustainability, environmental awareness, engineering and related sciences, as well as prior knowledge of the language of the host country, are important eligibility components. Fellows enrich their academic learning through professional internships and immersion experiences focused on environmental sustainability.
Graduate study scholarships are granted for one academic year (10 months) with the possibility of a one-year extension for students completing a full degree program in Germany.
DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship
The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities for students who have well-defined study, research or internship plans for their stay in Germany.
Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems Fellowship
The Fraunhofer Center provides recipients with project experience in PV technologies, building energy technologies, distributed electrical energy systems and/or technology commercialization. Fellowship positions range from research on cutting-edge clean technology solutions to work with a behavioral scientist on issues related to energy-saving technology. Placements are in Boston for three months to one year. A minimum commitment of six months and a 40-hour work week is required of all fellows.
Provides for individually designed study/research (either an academic or an art grant) or English teaching assistantship (ETA) in a single country.
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields.
San Francisco Fellows
The San Francisco Fellows program affords recipients the opportunity to learn about local government while working full time as a city employee. Fellows must have earned an undergraduate degree in the past five years. They participate in learning and development sessions designed to help develop essential workplace skills, enhance understanding of city processes and hone leadership ability. Fellows travel outside of San Francisco to increase their understanding of the larger context of their work. They work together on small group-consulting projects for various city departments.

IFSA Butler: Glasgow School of Art
Through the Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University, Whitman students may enroll in the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland. Glasgow is a vibrant city with a population of 650,000. It is home to the national Scottish companies of ballet, opera, orchestra and chorus. It offers two repertory theaters, the Glasgow Film Theater, galleries, and museums. Serious studio art students who attend the Glasgow School of Art can expect to spend 30-35 hours a week in the studio working on independent projects under faculty supervision.
In the DIS Copenhagen program, students can take a variety of courses in English while experiencing immersion in Copenhagen, Denmark. This program provides students with an academically challenging environment where students can take over 200 elective course that are all taught in English. There are several cultural engagements opportunities like course-integrated study tours, DIScovery Trips, and housing.
Through Whitman College's affiliation with Syracuse University Florence, qualified students may study at the Syracuse Center in Florence, Italy, a well-established program that was founded over 40 years ago. This program hosts approximately 400 US students each semester and offers courses in everything from art history to Italian politics. Florence is a particularly well-suited destination for art history students because the city's world-class art and architecture. Moreover, the Syracuse program incorporates field trips into many of the art history courses enabling students to study from the actual art and architecture itself.
Through the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES), Whitman Students may enroll at the IES Center in Rome to study everything from art history to economics. As one of Europe's most important cultural and religious centers, Rome offers students the opportunity to learn amidst Roman ruins, baroque cathedrals, a lively contemporary visual and performing arts scene, and the Vatican. The IES Rome program offers courses taught in English at the IES Center and, for students with sufficient Italian, the opportunity to enroll in courses at one of the three local universities. In addition, the program offers internships with local organizations and optional field trips each semester to locations such as Pompeii, Sicily, Tuscany, and Umbria.
IES: Berlin Metropolitan Studies
The IES: Berlin Metropolitan Studies program provides students with an opportunity to use the thriving cultural and political center of Berlin as a case study in issues affecting major metropolitan areas. Students must enroll in a German language course, but all other instruction is in English. Field trips to Paris, France and St. Petersburg, Russia provide a comparative context for study; however, previous German language study is not required.
The Philadelphia Center
Qualified Whitman students interested in a professional development experience in the historic city of Philadelphia may elect to participate in The Philadelphia Center program. Participants on this program will intern on a field of their choice for 32 hours a week. The Philadelphia Center offers more than 800 internship options to choose from with organizations such as the Environmental Protection Association, Philadelphia Zoo, Arden Theater Company, and the District Attorney's office. In addition to the internship, students will enroll in a weekly City Seminar and one elective course.
CIEE Prague Central European Studies
The Central European Studies program in Prague, Czech Republic is intended for students who have an interest in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, as well as in the political, social, and/or economic transformation from state control to democratic market-based systems.
