Samantha Howell Prisoners' Legal Services of New York Albany, NY Director of Pro Bono & Outreach I was hired in 2011 to develop a statewide pro bono project for helping incarcerated New Yorkers on civil legal issues regarding their conditions of confinement (i.e. challenges to solitary confinement, accessing medical and mental health care, etc.). Specifically, I recruit volunteers to represent indigent prisoners for free. I have since developed the only program of its kind in the country. I oversee a Pro Bono Attorney and a panel of more than 100 volunteers, and am constantly expanding our program (we have an immigration project and are getting ready to add a parole/medical parole project and a new fundraising project). I get to work with attorneys, community volunteers and students, present at community and academic events, develop training manuals and materials, practice law in state court, and about 1000 other exciting and fun things. All at this amazing program - the only one in the country! We have even been approached by a similar organization in another state who was interested in using us a model for developing their own pro bono program! I love being able to use my law degree in a non-litigation setting where everyday is a surprise and a challenge, and I get to use all of the skills I gained (or improved) at Whitman (Thanks Bob Withycombe, TKO, Michelle Janning, Keith Farrington and Jim Hanson!) Eric Bachhuber U.S. Government Accountability Office Seattle, WA Senior Analyst The GAO is considered the congressional watchdog, as it investigates fraud, waste, and abuse in the federal government. The majority of the people at GAO who are engaged in mission work are analysts.
The analyst plans and conducts reviews of multiagency programs and the internal operations of individual agencies. Subject areas take in the full spectrum of federal activities, including health care, housing and urban development, tax policy and administration, national security and international relations, financial management, and natural resources and the environment. Typically, an analyst works as part of a team conducting in-depth research on studies requested by committees, subcommittees, or individual members of Congress or studies that GAO has been mandated by legislation to conduct. This work is demanding, time bound, and important. Analysts must have strong methodological and research skills and must excel at documenting the work they do, writing the results and the findings, and presenting the work to audiences ranging from their team members to members of Congress and their staff. The hallmarks of our work are accuracy, objectivity, and integrity.
