David Kessler – “The End of Overeating”

Dr. David A. Kessler is the former Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration (1990-1997). He was appointed by President G. H. W. Bush and reappointed by President Clinton. He has also served as the dean of the medical schools at Yale and the University of California, San Francisco, where he is currently a professor. Dr. Kessler has a wide range of experience in research, clinical medicine, education, administration, and the law. He is a graduate of Amherst College, The University of Chicago Law School, and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Kessler’s book, A Question of Intent, chronicles his tenure at the FDA and, in particular, the agency's battle against tobacco. In addition, Dr. Kessler has published numerous articles in The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and other major medical journals. His book, The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite was an instant New York Times bestseller. It is also available in a teen addition, Your Food Is Fooling You: How Your Brain is Hijacked by Sugar, Fat, and Salt. He serves on the board of various organizations and is a member of the Institute of Medicine.

Peter Rosset – “The Global Peasant/Farmer Struggle for our Food System”

Peter Rosset, Ph.D., is Professor at the Advanced Studies Institute of the Southern Frontier (ECOSUR), Mexico; Researcher at the Center for the Study of Rural Change in Mexico (CECCAM); Co-coordinator of the Land Research Action Network, a member of the Technical support team, La Via Campesina (www.viacampesina.org), and lives in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.

Jon Rubin – “Conflict Kitchen and the Practice of Politically Engaged Art”

Jon Rubin creates interventions into public life that reinvent social and political conditions and create new platforms for agency, participation, and exchange. His projects include starting a radio station in an abandoned steel town that only plays the sound of an extinct bird, running a barter-based nomadic art school, operating a restaurant that produces a live talk show with its customers, and running another that only serves cuisine from countries with which the United States is in conflict. He has exhibited at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Mercosul Biennial, Brazil; The Shanghai Biennial; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver; The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard, New York; The Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico; The Rooseum, Sweden; The ParkingGallery, Tehran, Iran; as well as in backyards, living rooms, and street corners. He is currently short-listed for the International Award for Participatory Art.
