Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have canceled the workshop Into the Future: Theater and Dance at Whitman College and Beyond.

Hello, and welcome to the Department of Theater Arts and Dance at Whitman College.

I’m excited to tell you about an event we are having on Saturday, Feb. 27 just for high school students in grades 9-12 called Into the Future: Theater and Dance at Whitman College and Beyond. This event will provide students a preview of the life of a Whitman College Theatre and Dance student. Zoom allows us to host high school students from any geographic location as they take workshops that illustrate what classes are like in our department, and get to know our wonderful and welcoming faculty. Students will have multiple opportunities during the day to take classes where they can increase their knowledge of physical theatre, try their hand at aging themselves for character roles through the art of makeup design, and learn new dance techniques.

We will also give virtual tours of our amazing home, the Harper Joy Theatre—a truly incredible facility that provides students an opportunity to learn in theatrical spaces that equal those found at a professional regional theatre. The workshops and tours will be assisted by current students from our department, who are happy to give you a glimpse of life as a college student.

Finally, participants will also be able to spend some time with the Director of the Dance program and me, to answer your questions about our department, Whitman College, or life beyond college as a theatre and dance professional.

If you are a high school student thinking of pursuing theatre and/or dance in college someday, please take some time to look over the information on the workshops and register for our Feb. 27  event. We hope we will see you as we journey Into the Future…

Sincerely,

Laura Hope
Associate Professor of Theater
Chair, Department of Theater and Dance
Director of Theater, Harper Joy Theatre.

Finding your Groove + Student Dance Demo and Q & A

Moving easily with the feel of the music is an innate capacity we all possess.  How do we rediscover that capacity; how do we kindle it, fuel it?  In this half-hour session Peter de Grasse will invite us to shut off our cameras as he talks us through a series of simple instructions to spark our innate capacity for grooving. Current Theater and Dance student Neave Fleming will assist.  In the second half of the workshop, Neave and other current Theater and Dance students will demonstrate current choreographic material from their advanced contemporary class before fielding questions from attendees.
