In 2005, our department adopted a senior project requirement for all mathematics majors. This requirement is fulfilled as part of a one-semester course (Math 497) taught in the spring. Toward the end of the fall semester, students are paired with faculty members on an equitable basis based partly upon the faculty member's area of expertise and the student's interest. The faculty member and the student then work together to determine a suitable project. Work on the project typically does not begin until the spring semester. However, students interested in honors in mathematics, need to lay a foundation for their project over winter break.
The student works on the project independently with the guidance and advice of the faculty member. The student gathers information, solves problems, and organizes their findings. Weekly meetings with the faculty member, peer editing with another member of the project class, regular progress reports, and oral presentations form the foundation for the course.
A year-by-year archive of the final written portions of the senior projects appears below.
