Our lab at Whitman College has been preparing Banker style primary cultures of dissociated hippocampal neurons to study mechanisms of dendritic development since 2002. We were particularly interested in the regulation of dendrite maturation, because our work, and previous reports from Gary Banker's group had shown that the maturational state of the dendritic arbor is rate-limiting in synapse formation (Fletcher et al., 1994; Withers et al., 2000).
