Welcome Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

We in the Dean of Students Office would like to welcome you to Whitman College. We look forward to acquainting you with our campus and the people who make this an exceptional living and learning community. This is an exciting and challenging time for both new students and their parents. Your son or daughter will receive a lot of information from us in the coming weeks to help him or her plan and prepare for college. This booklet is designed especially for you as you assume the role of a Whitman parent. It contains information about the academic requirements, the residential life of the campus, and contact information in case you have a question or concern.

As is written in the college mission statement, “Whitman offers an ideal setting for rigorous learning and scholarship and encourages creativity, character, and responsibility.” Students will be challenged inside and outside of the classroom to expand their knowledge and explore new ideas. In this booklet you will learn about the myriad of programs and activities available for students to discover their passions and talents, and to connect the academic curriculum to experiential and transformative learning opportunities. What sets Whitman apart from other places of learning is the mentoring, support, and encouragement students will receive to match their demanding aspirations.

We commend you for the significant role you played in making it possible for your son or daughter to attend Whitman College. You will continue to be an important source of support for them in the next four years, and we hope that we can work together to make this a rewarding experience.
