WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- George Fox retained its hold on first place in the Northwest Conference baseball standings with 14-1 and 6-0 victories over Whitman College Saturday afternoon in Newberg, Ore.
The Bruins upped their NWC record to 19-3 (24-7 overall) while dropping Whitman to 2-17 and 3-22.
Defensive woes plagued the Missionaries in the opener. Three costly errors made eight of the first 11 George Fox runs unearned.
Down 5-0, Whitman tallied its lone run in the top of the third. Patrick Stauffer singled, stole second and scored when the Bruins committed one of their three errors.
The Missionaries nearly added to their run total when Erik Korsmo doubled to lead off the sixth inning. Korsmo moved to third on a ground-out but then was thrown out at the plate as he tried to score on a second ground ball.
Mark Putney went the distance on the mound for George Fox, giving up just five hits while striking out six.
Whitman nearly grabbed the early lead in the second inning of game two. Matt Morris-Rosenfeld led off with single and advanced to second base on a ground-out. Jason Sease singled to right-center field but a strong relay throw nailed Morris-Rosenfeld at the plate.
George Fox broke in front with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the inning. An infield hit and base on balls set the stage for Eric Ganterbein, who doubled home both runners.
The Bruins added three runs in the third to take charge. Two of those runs came on back-to-back solo homers to left field.
Whitman threatened again in the fourth. Korsmo smacked a lead-off double but was gunned down by another strong throw as the attempted to take third base on a Brian Kitamura fly ball to right field.
Jeremy Cheney got the pitching win for George Fox, holding Whitman to just four hits. Korsmo had two of those hits, boosting his team-leading batting average to .403.
Whitman returns home next weekend to host Pacific Lutheran in a four-game series at Borleske Stadium.
