WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With two more wins on Sunday, the Whitman College doubles duo of Alyssa Roberg and Divneet Kaur advanced into the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Pacific Northwest Regional Tennis Championships in Salem, Ore.

Roberg and Kaur opened play on Sunday with an 8-4 victory over Willamette's Kate Thurber and Fabi Dieguez. The two Missionaries then posted an 8-5 upset of the bracket's No. 2 seeds, Pacific's Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto.

Monday's doubles semifinals are set for about 2 p.m. on the Linfield campus in McMinnville. Roberg and Kaur play the No. 4 seeds, Willamette's Shannon Palmer and Natalia Agarycheva.

In Sunday's singles play, Roberg got off to a good start with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Willamette's Alli Marshall. In the quarterfinals, however, the Whitman first-year player lost (score not available) to top-seeded Whitworth senior Rachel Burns.

Both Kaur and Whitman teammate Hadley DeBree lost their first matches on Sunday to drop from singles play. Kaur lost 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) to Linfield's Sallie Katter, the No. 2 seed, while DeBree fell 7-5, 6-2 to Willamette's Shannon Palmer, the No. 6 seed.

Whitman's Elise Otto, who won the ITA's fall tournament last year as a sophomore, is on foreign study this semester and not on hand to defend her singles title. Otto also teamed with Katie Oost to win last fall's doubles crown. Oost graduated last spring.
