Barton, Rausch Lead Whits in Golf Tourney

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College juniors Brian Barton and Max Rausch both shot 6-over par 78 on Sunday as the Northwest Conference Fall Classic got underway Saturday at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland, Ore.

Barton and Rausch are part of a seven-play tie for 13th in the individual standings.

Meanwhile, sophomore John Abercrombie and freshman Geoff Burks both carded 84 in the opening round to complete the Missionary team score.

With a 324 team total for its top four, Whitman is in seventh place in the nine-school field, but just one stroke back of sixth-place George Fox and 13 strokes behind fifth-place Pacific Lutheran.

Linfield is in first place in the team scoring with a 299, two strokes in front of Pacific. Whitworth is third at 306 and Puget Sound fourth at 309.

Also playing for Whitman are junior Noah Jolley, who shot 91, and senior Grant Brandal, who finished with a 93.

Pacific's Max Bonk fired a 1-under par 71 to take the first-round individual lead.

The men's Fall Classic concludes Sunday with a second round of 18 holes.
