WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With three players bunched near the top of the leaderboard, Whitman College was just two shots off the team lead after Sunday's opening round of the Northwest Conference Northern Colleges Golf Tournament at the Oakbrook Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash.
Whitman junior Brian Barton fired a 3-over par 75 and was in third place in the individual scoring. The Missionaries posted a team score of 307, two shots back of Whitworth and Puget Sound. Pacific Lutheran was fourthat 316.
Sophomore John Abercrombie and freshman Geoff Burks both shot 76 and were tied for fifth. Junior Max Rausch carded an 80 to complete Whitman's team score.
Senior Grant Brandal and junior Noah Jolley also played for Whitman, shooting 87 and 100, respectively.
Puget Sound's Jordan Hodge held the first-day lead with a 70. Whitworth's Jared Descoteaux was in second place at 73.
The tournament concludes Monday with a second round of 18 holes.
