Holland, Head Pace Women's Golf Team

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- First-year players Caitlin Holland and Tate Head shot opening round scores of 84 and 85, respectively, to lead the Whitman College women's team as the Northwest Conference Fall Classic got underway Saturday at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland, Ore.

Holland is in a three-way tie for sixth place with Head all alone in ninth.

With a 357 team score, Whitman is in fifth place in the nine-school field, just two strokes back of fourth-place Puget Sound.

"We came into this tournament hoping to finish near the top tier, ahead of both Puget Sound and Pacific," Whitman coach Skip Molitor said. "We've got quite a few strokes on Pacific and we're just a few strokes behind Puget Sound. With a good day tomorrow, we can accomlish our goal."

Sydney Conway, another first-year player, shot 93 for the Missionaries in round one while sophomore Allison Lodine rounded out the team score with a 95. 

"Portland is Allison's home town, so it's nice that she contributed to our team score," Molitor said.

Also playing for Whitman were senior Kelsi Evans, who carded a 96, and senior Sydney Saito, who shot 103.

In the first round team scoring, Whitworth is in first place with a 334. George Fox and Linfield are second and third, respectively, with 342 and 348 totals. Puget Sound is two strokes ahead of Whitman at 355.

Whitworth's Emily Guthrie holds the first day lead with an 80.

The women's Fall Classic concludes Sunday with a second round of 18 holes.
