WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Unable to offset a 6-0 deficit after the first two innings, Whitman College dropped a 7-4 Northwest Conference baseball decision to Pacific University Sunday afternoon in Forest Grove, Ore.
Pacific bunched eight of its 12 hits into the first two innings to build its early lead.
Whitman plated its first run in the fourth inning. Patrick Stauffer drew a lead-off walk, moved to second on a ground-out and scored when Eric Tolleson singled down the left-field line.
The Missionaries added a second run in the fifth. After Joe Rodhouse and Mitch Hannoosh reached on two more walks, Stauffer knocked an RBI-single into right-center field. A passed ball gave Whitman runners at second and third with one out, but Joey Pulito -- Pacific's third pitcher of the game -- retired the next two hitters on an infield pop-up and grounder.
A Missionary scoring opportunity went by the wayside in the sixth. After Erik Korsmo reached on a Pacific fielding error, Rodhouse drilled a double to center field, but Korsmo was called out at third base for interference.
The Boxers extended their lead to 7-2 on Jeramey Probert's two-out seventh-inning solo home run, but Whitman threatened again in the top of the eighth. After Jay Richards and Tolleson led off with singles and Korsmo was hit by a pitch, Jason Sease swatted a two-run single to left.
With their lead down to 7-4, Pacific's infield turned a 6-4-3 doubleplay to end the inning.
Tolleson, who started on the mound for Whitman, struggled in the first two innings but then held the Boxers to just two hits over the next four frames. Korsmo tossed the last two innings, giving up just one run on two hits.
Whitman returns to Borleske Stadium next weekend for its final home games of the season. The Missionaries host Willamette for two games Saturday and one more on Sunday. First pitch both days is noon.
