WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- First-place Linfield completed its three-game weekend sweep of Whitman College with a 17-1 Northwest Conference baseball victory on a soggy Sunday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.
Linfield, now 8-1 in the NWC and 16-5 overall, erupted for 12 runs in the first three innings and coasted home from there as a light but steady rain fell for most of the game.
Whitman, slipping to 3-6 in conference, tallied its lone run in the fourth inning when sophomore Eric Tolleson singled, stole second base and raced home when senior Jason Sease singled to left field.
Tolleson and Sease finished with two hits apiece, but starting pitcher Blaine Mercado had Whitman's only other safety, a lead-off double in the second inning.
Linfield sprayed 20 hits around the ballpark and took advantage of three errors that led to seven unearned runs. Dustin Smith led the way with three hits and three RBI. Tyson Smith also knocked in three runs with a double and triple.
The Wildcats also got two hits each from Cole Bixenman, Rhett Fenton, Zach Boskovich, Eric Evenson and Mitch Webb. Evenson smacked a pair of two-baggers and scored three runs.
Evan Hilberg tossed the first five innings for Linfield, fanning four and walking two, to run his mound record to 3-1 on the season. Reese McCulley threw the final four innings, giving up just one hit and one base on balls.
Whitman's Eric Korsmo, a junior, and freshmen Max Settle-Winick and Tyler Grisdale pitched the last five innings, holding Linfield to just three runs.
Whitman hits the road next weekend for a three-game series against George Fox in Newberg, Ore.
Linfield hosts a three-game set against Whitworth next weekend.
