WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Failing to recover from a game one collapse, the Whitman College women's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Dominican University (River Forest, Ill.) in a Saturday morning match at the Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The Stars, who finished the tournament with a 6-3 season record, downed Whitman 25-12, 25-20, 25-23.

"We came out ready to play initially and took a 7-1 lead in the first set behind some tough serving, but we just lost our focus, emotionally and technically, after that," Whitman coach Carolyn Papineau said.

"We recovered our balance in the second and third set, but Dominican was a polished team that didn't do anything spectacular but did a lot of things well. Our passing game was not where it needed to be to run an effective offense."

First-year middle blocker Corie Brewer paced Whitman with nine kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Alex Graves had 10 digs, six kills and three service aces.

Whitman also got 17 assists from Katie Richards, 11 digs from libero Kelsie Butts and six kills from Katie Miller.

Whitman took a 1-2 record into its final tournament match later in the day against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
