WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Willamette scored with 75 seconds left in regulation and then salvaged a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Whitman College in Northwest Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon in Salem, Ore.
"We had the win in our hands until the very end," Whitman coach Scott Shields said. "Today, we feel like we really gave the game away. It feels more like a loss for us, even though it was a tie."
Whitman snared the early 1-0 lead when Corina Gabbert headed home her 16th goal of the season with just under five minutes left in the first half. Claire Westcott collected her first college assist on the play.

Corina Gabbert stumbles forward as the ball bounces over the goal and Amy Hasson fights through a Bearcat bear hug. |
"We controlled the first half and had multiple opportunities to score," Shields said.
"We had three different corner kicks sail through the box without us getting a head on any of them.
"Actually there was one where Corina was pushed in the back, stumbled ahead and had the ball bounce off the back of her head. The ball went up and over the crossbar. It was one of those kind of days."
With about 15 minutes left in the second half, Whitman misfired on an opportunity to take a 2-0 lead when Gabbert missed the net on a penalty kick.
"Liz Forbes played a ball into Amy Hasson who was running through the penalty box," Shields said. "Amy was about ready to shoot when one of the defenders clipped her heels and tripped her.
"Corina converted a penalty kick for us yesterday, so she stepped up to take this one. There was a divot in that part of the penalty box, and it might have affected her shot. She missed it high and wide."

Willamette, which outshot Whitman 11-3 in the second half, kept up the pressure and finally broke through at the 88:45 mark when Janny Rachel headed a shot into the net from five yards out.
"Willamette really turned on the jets in the second half," Shields said. "All of their hard work paid off at the end, but we still feel like we had plenty of opportunies to win the game."
Whitman outshot the Bearcats 3-0 in the two 10-minute overtime sessions. The Missionaries also had a 2-0 edge in corner kicks in overtime.
Gabbert fired off a season 11 shots for Whitman, putting five on goal. Innes had two shots.
Courtney Porter went the distance in goal for Whitman, making five saves.
With one game left in its season, Whitman is 6-8-1 in the NWC (7-9-2 overall) and tied for fourth place with Linfield in the conference standings. Willamette is one victory in front of both teams with a 7-6-1 record.
Whitman hosts its season finale on Friday, playing Lewis & Clark at 11 a.m. at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
