WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For the second time in little more than a month, Whitman College freshman Karl Mering has been named NWC Student Athlete of the Week award for men's swimming.
Mering persevered and excelled during a long week that started with several days of training in southern California and a dual meet at the University of Redlands, followed by two NWC meets in western Oregon.
With Mering winning five individual races and contributing to four victories relay teams, the Whitman men remained undefeated in dual meet competition, running their season record to 6-0 and conference mark to 4-0.
Whitman's toughest competition came against Redlands, a team that placed seventh at last year's NCAA Division III national championships.
The final outcome in the team scoring was not decided until Whitman won the final relay (200-yard freestyle) with Mering staking the Missionaries to an early lead on the first leg.
Mering also swam a leg in the meet's opening relay (400-yard medley), which the Missionaries won in school record time. He also was first in the 100-yard butterfly.
The Whitman men posted lopsided NWC dual meet victories last weekend at Linfield and Willamette.
Against Linfield, Mering notched decisive victories in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly, and swam a sizzling 47.30 on the opening of the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Mering added victories in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events against Willamette, and he anchored Whitman's winning effort in the 200-yard medley relay.
Mering has yet to lose a race dual meet competition this season, either individually or as part of a relay event.
Whitman's swim teams face a pair of tough NWC opponents this weekend when they host their final home meets of the season.
Whitman battles Pacific Lutheran at 6 p.m. Friday and Puget Sound at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both meets take place in the Louise and Paul Harvey Pool in Baker Ferguson Fitness Center.
