Logger Women Outscore Whits by Four

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Puget Sound broke open a close game with an 18-3 spurt to start the second half and held off Whitman College the rest of the way for a 74-70 women's basketball victory Saturday night in Sherwood Center.
The 17th-ranked Loggers improved to 13-2 in the Northwest Conference and 20-3 on the season.
Whitman, losing for only the second time in its last seven games, slipped to 6-8 in conference and 11-12 overall.
Jocelyn Riordan drilled four 3-pointers for the Loggers and finished with 20 points. Natasha Ludwig posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Claire Ely added 15 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Senior Hilary White with 20 points and seven rebounds was one of four Whitman players scoring in double figures. First-year forward Mary Madden posted her first collegiate double-double with a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Michelle Krall added 13 points for the Missionaries while first-year guard Kelly Peterson combined 11 points with five assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Puget Sound's offensive fireworks to start the second half turned a two-point game into a 55-38 lead for the Loggers. The visitors still led by 17 points, 62-45, with just under eight minutes left to play.
Whitman kept chipping away and outscored the Loggers 12-5 over the final 2:30 to close the final gap.
Whitman won the rebounding battle 37-34, but Puget Sound shot 50 percent from the floor for the game, after knocking down 15 of 26 shots (57.7 percent) in the second half.
The Missionaries bolted to a 7-0 lead to start the game before the Loggers worked their way to a 27-18 advantage with eight minutes left. With Puget Sound in front 33-24, Whitman ended the half on an 11-4 run to trail 37-35 at the break.Whitman plays its final home game of the season when it hosts Whitworth at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Puget Sound hosts Pacific and Lewis & Clark next Friday and Saturday.
