Whits Net Wire-to-Wire Willamette Win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Leading from start to finish, the Whitman College women's basketball team pinned a 67-35 Northwest Conference loss on Willamette University Saturday night in Sherwood Center.

Winning its third straight game and downing Willamette for the second time this season, Whitman improved to 4-6 in the NWC and 9-10 overall.

Willamette dropped to 1-9 in conference and 3-16 on the season.

Junior center Rebecca Sexton (Fox Island, Wash.; Gig Harbor HS) paced Whitman with 16 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior Hilary White (Carlsbad, Calif.; Bishop’s School) added 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Senior Michelle Krall (Poway, Calif.; Poway HS) posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. She also had three assists and three steals.

Alex Zenna with 12 points was the only Willamette player scoring in double digits, but Keilyn Fujioka pulled down nine rebounds and blocked three shots.

With Sexton and White scoring five points apiece, Whitman raced away to a 16-4 lead to start the game. Krall slipped inside for a three-point play with six minutes left to give the Missionaries their biggest lead of the half at 27-10.

Krall nailed a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the half to stake the Missionaries to a 32-16 cushion at intermission.

Whitman kicked off the second on a 12-2 run and the Bearcats crawled no closer than 22 points the rest of the way. The Missionaries tacked on the game's final 12 points over the last five minutes of play.

Whitman shot 41 percent from the floor while holding Willamette to a paltry 16.7 percent (10-60). The Missionaries also outrebounded the Bearcats by a 51-39 margin.

Mary Madden (Huntington Beach, Calif.; Edison HS), a first-year forward, came off the Whitman bench for seven points and seven boards.

Whitman hits the road next weekend for games Friday at George Fox and Pacific on Saturday.

Willamette hosts Puget Sound next Friday and travels to Linfield on Saturday.
