Whit Women Take Big Bite Out of Wolves

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- In a game between two teams mauled by the injury bug, Whitman College rolled over Walla Walla University 76-28 in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night in College Place, Wash.

Senior Hilary White had 21 points and nine rebounds to pace Whitman, which won its third straight to raise its season record to 4-3. The Wolves stumbled to 0-4 on the season. 

Whitman, missing four regulars due to injury, also got 13 points and six rebounds from first-year forward Mary Madden and 12 points and five boards from sophomore post Kirsten Vaculik.

Junior Jessica Brice handed out 10 assists to go with seven points while Anna Forge, also a junior, had eight points, seven steals, six rebounds and four assists.

Ahead 24-11 after the opening 12 minutes of play, Whitman broke the game open by outscoring Walla Walla 23-2 over the remainder of the first half. White tallied 11 straight points during the stretch and had 17 points by the break, which had the Missionaries in front 47-11.

Whitman opened the second half on a 10-2 run and coasted home. The Missionaries took their largest lead at 76-23 before Walla Walla scored the game's final five points to account for the final margin. 

Victoria Novielli scored 12 points for Walla Walla. Megan Moore added six points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Wolves.

Whitman, which also got seven rebounds from junior post Rebecca Sexton, outboarded the Wolves 44-24 and forced the home team into 30 turnovers.

White, Madden and Vaculik combined for 46 points, making 19 of 31 shots from the foor. The Missionaries as a team shot 48.4 percent while holding Walla Walla to a 20.5 percent shooting night.   

Both teams played the game with just eight players in uniform.

Whitman returns home to host Eastern Oregon this Friday. That game starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men's game between Whitman and UC-Santa Cruz at 7:30 p.m.

Both games take place on George Ball Court in Sherwood Center.
