WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The visiting Whitman College men led by as many 10 points in the first half, but the University of Puget rallied in the second half for an 82-72 victory Saturday night that keeps the Loggers unbeaten in the Northwest Conference.
Puget Sound, having clinched the NWC title in Friday night's victory over Whitworth, is 14-0 in conference and 23-2 on the season. Whitman slipped to 5-9 and 9-14.
Whitman's Chris Faidley, who led all scorers with 25 points, nailed his first three 3-point baskets to give the Missionaries a 9-5 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Faidley knocked down another 3-pointer at the 12:22 mark to extend Whitman's lead to 19-9.
The Loggers pecked away and pulled to within 29-26 with 4:32 left in the half. Jordan Wheeler kept Whitman in front, completing a 3-point play and then drilling a 3-pointer for a 35-29 lead with 3:40 remaining. After two Puget Sound free throws cut Whitman's cushion to a single point, Faidley connected for this fifth trey of the first half. Jason Foster's layup with 32 seconds on the clock left the Missionaries with a 38-36 halftime lead.
Faidley opened the second half with two free throws, but Puget Sound seized control with a 19-5 run over the next eight minutes.
Another 3-point play by Wheeler, followed by two more Faidley free throws, cut the Logger lead to 67-62 with five minutes left. Steve Campbell hit a 3-pointer with 1:19 left, drawing Whitman to within 74-70, but the next two Missionary possessions ended with a missed shot and turnover, and the home team pulled away.
Wheeler had 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Brandon Shaw added 10 points while 6-foot-7 freshman David Michaels collected a game-high 13 rebounds. Whitman outrebounded the Loggers 42-34.
Whitman returns home for its final two games. It hosts Whitworth on Tuesday and Lewis & Clark on Friday. Both games start at 8 p.m. in Sherwood Center.
