WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Scoring five points in the final 13 seconds, the last three coming on a long ball by Jordan Wheeler with four seconds left, Whitman College pulled off a minor miracle with a 69-68 Northwest Conference victory over Pacific Lutheran Friday night in Tacoma, Wash.

Steve Campbell, who led all scorers with a career-high 25 points, grabbed a missed PLU free throw and was fouled with 13 seconds remaining. After Campbell made both of his free throws, cutting Whitman's deficit to 68-66, the Lutes turned the ball over and Wheeler took advantage with his game-winning the shot from the 3-point stripe.

Whitman improved to 5-8 in the NWC and 9-13 on the season. The Lutes skidded to 3-10 and 9-13.

Campbell, a junior playing his first season at Whitman, drilled seven of his 12 shots from the 3-point line and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. The Missionaries also got two treys each from Wheeler, senior Chris Faidley and freshman David Michaels, and finished the night 13 of 29 (44.8 percent) from long range.

Wheeler handed out seven assists to go with 12 points. Michaels and freshman Brandon Shaw added 12 points apiece while Faidley had eight.

The two teams traded small leads throughout the first half. A Michaels layup with 2:33 left in the half gave Whitman a 35-32 lead, but the Lutes scored five unanswered points to lead 37-32 at the break.

PLU stayed in front for most of the second stanza, and Kyle McTaggart nailed a 3-pointer with 7:02 remaining for a 62-52 advantage. Campbell responded with two of his 3-pointers, Faidley added a third and Shaw made a free throw to pull the Missionaries to within 64-62 with 3:29 left on the clock.

Shaw's layup with a minute left again cut Whitman's deficit to two points, but Victor Bull's basket pushed PLU's lead back to four, and the Missionaries turned the ball over on their next possession. Two more turnovers, one by each side, and a missed PLU free throw then set the stage for Whitman's improbable victory.
