Women Rip for 86 (Again), Beat Bearcats

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Scoring 86 points for a second consecutive night, the Whitman College women's basketball team shot past Willamette University 86-52 Saturday night in Sherwood Center.

Whitman retains a share of third place in the Northwest Conference, improving to 7-5 and 15-6 overall.

The loss dropped Willamette to 4-14 on the season and 3-9 in the NWC.

With four players scoring in double figures, Whitman shot 50.8 percent from the floor for the night. Led by first-year guard Jennifer Keyes, who drilled five 3-pointers, the Missionaries converted 11 of 23 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

Jenele Peterson and Hilary White paced Whitman's offense with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Both players were two of three from the 3-point line. Keyes also finished with 15 points, and Rebecca Sexton added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Michelle Krall grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as Whitman outrebounded the Bearcats 45-33. Ellen Vertatschitsch contributed eight points, four rebounds and four assists.

Molly Fillion led Willamette with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Keilyn Fujioka gave the Bearcats 10 points, five boards and three blocks. Alex Zennan and Jenny Fillion scored eight points apiece for the visitors.

Whitman knocked down five 3-pointers in building a 43-23 halftime lead. Jennifer Keyes connected from long distance midway through the half for a 21-14 lead and then struck again with 90 seconds left to finish an 11-3 run that extended Whitman's lead to 39-21. White also had a pair of first-half threes.

The Missionaries nailed six more 3-pointers in running away from Willamette in the second half. Earlier this season in Salem, Whitman downed the Bearcats 61-34. 

Whitman takes its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, traveling to Tacoma, Wash., to play Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.

Willamette hosts Pacific and Lewis & Clark next weekend.
