Whit BB Women Snap Skid With Big Win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Snapping a three-game losing streak, the Whitman College women's basketball team rolled to an 86-59 Northwest Conference victory over Linfield College Friday night in Sherwood Center.

Beating Linfield for the second time this season, Whitman improved to 6-5 in the NWC, tied with Pacific for third place. The Wildcats slipped to 3-17 and 2-9. 

Now 14-6 on the season, Whitman led 43-29 at intermission and used a 9-0 spurt to push its advantage to 20 points, 63-43, with 11 minutes left to play. The lead ballooned to as many as 29 points before Linfield tallied the game's last bucket to account for the final margin.

Hilary White and Rebecca Sexton scored 17 points apiece to pace Whitman. Sexton, who blocked three shots, was eight of 12 from the floor and leads the NWC with a 59.4 percent shooting percentage. White had a good shooting night as well, canning seven of 13 shots from the floor, including three of five attempts from the 3-point line.

Sexton, a 6-foot-3 center, also pulled down 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Anna Forge just missed a double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Jenele Peterson chipped in with 12 points, making all six of her free throws to boost her NWC-leading free throw percentage to 88.6 percent. Whitman as a team was 12 of 13 from the charity stripe and continues to lead the conference with a 74.7 percentage.

Jennifer Keyes knocked three 3-pointers for nine points while Michelle Krall had eight points, five rebounds and three steals. All 11 players on the Whitman roster dented the scoring column, and reserve guard Dawna Mello handed out six assists.

Whitman shot 47.9 percent from the floor for the game while holding Linfield to 36.7 percent. The Missionaries also forced the Wildcats into 19 turnovers.  

Kelsey Forrest and Chrissy Baumgartner each scored 11 points for Linfield. Lindsey Gummersall added 10 points and Nadra Evans combined eight points and eight rebounds. 

Whitman stays at home Saturday to host Willamette at 6 p.m. in Sherwood Center. Linfield travels to Spokane, Wash., on Saturday for a 6 p.m. game against Whitworth.
