WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Pacific University shot its way to a 16-point halftime lead and then turned back Whitman College in the second half for a 94-79 Northwest Conference women's basketball victory Friday night in Forest Grove, Ore.

Winning for the fourth time in five games, Pacific pulled into a three-way tie with Whitman and Whitworth for third place in the NWC standings. All three clubs are 5-4 in conference play.

Michelle Krall

Whitman, which dropped to 13-5 on the season, got 18 points apiece from juniors Michelle Krall and Hilary White. Krall just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. White grabbed seven more.

Rebecca Sexton, who was six of seven from the floor and five of seven from the free throw line, added 17 points.

Whitman trailed 49-33 at halftime and slipped behind by 20 early in the second half. Erica Schultz made a layup with 10:09 left to give the Boxers a 66-50 lead, but the Missionaries responded with a 12-2 run to close within 68-62 at the 6:18 mark.

Pacific tallied the game's next five points on free throws and allowed Whitman no closer than six points the rest of the way.

The Boxers made a killing at the charity stripe over the final 10 minutes, scoring 24 of their final 28 points from the line. Mallory Goldhammer, one of five Boxers to score in double figures, was expecially deadly at the line in the second half, making all 16 of her opportunities.

The Boxers also shot well from floor, making 50 percent of their shots for the game while outrebounding the Missionaries 47-36. With Krall picking off three steals, Whitman forced Pacific into 13 turnovers while committing just seven of their own.

Whitman also got nine points and three assists from Jenele Peterson and eight rebounds, six points and two blocks from Anna Forge.

Pacific's victory gives the Boxers a season split with the Missionaries. Whitman edged Pacific 44-43 early this month in Walla Walla.

Whitman heads to Newberg, Ore., Saturday for a 4 p.m. game against George Fox.
