Whit Women Give Coach 100th Victory

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Sending Pacific Lutheran to its first Northwest
Conference loss of the season, the Whitman College women also handed
coach Michelle Ferenz her 100th career victory Friday night in Sherwood Center.
Shooting 50 percent from the floor for the game, Whitman outpointed the Lutes 56-43 to raise its record to 12-2 on the season and 4-1 in the NWC. Pacific Lutheran slipped to 9-4 and 3-1.
Whitman led 27-16 at halftime and stretched its advantage to as many as 22 points with five-plus minutes left to play. Pacific Lutheran tallied 13 of the game's final 17 points to narrow the final margin.
Hilary White paced a balanced Whitman attack with 11 points. Jennifer Keyes came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers, good for nine points. Jenele Peterson added eight points while Michelle Krall combined a game-high seven rebounds with five points and three assists.
Pacific Lutheran's Emily Voorhies led all scorers with 14 points. Trinity Gibbons contributed 11 points, six boards and five steals for the Lutes.
After Rebecca Sexton scored the game's first two points 90 seconds into the first half, Whitman bumbled its way through seven turnovers, and Pacific Lutheran found itself in front 7-2 after Jordan Westering dropped in a 3-pointer with 13:30 on the clock. Keyes countered with a Whitman trey, sparking a 14-4 spurt that vaulted the Missionaries on top at 16-11.
Whitman continued to pull away, and a Jessica Brice 3-pointer with a minute left gave Whitman its biggest lead of the half at 27-13. The Lutes tacked on three points in the closing seconds to pull a little closer at the break. The Missionaries hit 12 of 19 first-half shots and outrebounded Pacific Lutheran 16-11. The two sides combined for 25 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Whitman stays at home Saturday to host Puget Sound in a 6 p.m. start. Pacific Lutheran travels to Spokane to play Whitworth at 4 p.m.
