Richards Makes Academic All-Distrct Team

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Jay Richards, a senior second baseman who led the Whitman College baseball team in hitting this spring, has earned Academic All-District honors.
Richards, a co-captain, is one of the five infielders voted to the Academic All-District Second Team in the college division for nine western states and British Columbia. The division includes all NCAA Division II and Division III schools, as well as all NAIA schools and junior colleges.
Capitol One sponsors the Academic All-District program, which is administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Richards, a graduate of Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, Wash., is a politics major at Whitman. His honors thesis focuses on "The United States Militia Movement: Ideological Fervor and Extremism in America."
Richards, who is the process of getting his real estate license, graduates from Whitman later this month. He plans to pursue a master's degree in business within the next few years and eventually wants to run his own business enterprise.
Richards is the first Whitman baseball player to earn Academic All-District recognition since J.D. Fischer was so honored at the end of his senior season in 2005.
Richards hit a team-high .331 this spring and received All-Northwest Conference Honorable Mention recognition. He topped int total hits, on-base percentage and runs scored.
He was named NWC Student Athlete of the Week for men's baseball after leading Whitman to a doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark in March.
Richards (Gig Harbor, Wash.; Bellarmine Prep, Tacoma) also received All-NWC Honorable Mention recognition at season's end.
