Whit Swimmers Drop Close Dual Decisions

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Whitman College swim teams dropped a pair of close dual meet decisions to Pacific Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in the Paul Harvey Pool at Baker Ferguson Fitness Center.
The visiting Lutes won the concluding men's event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, by .12 of a second to nip Whitman 107-98 in the men's dual. Pacific Lutheran held off their hosts for a 106-99 victory in the women's dual.
Sophomore Jamie Nusse and freshman Chris Bendix dominated the freestyle events for the Whitman men. Nusse won the 100- and 200-yard races while Bendix finished first at 500 and 1,000 yards.
For the Pacific Lutheran men, Jay Jones won the 400-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. The Lutes also got wins from Chase Mesford (50-yard freestyle), Jimmy Tonellato (100-yard butterfly) and Forrest Crain (100-yard backstroke).
Sophomore Lauren Flynn paced the Whitman women with victories in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races. The Missionaries also got wins from senior Courtney Fitzpatrick in the 100-yard butterfly, junior Chelsea Klinger in the 500-yard freestyle and first-year swimmer Linnea Scott in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Winners for the Pacific Lutheran women were Jessie Klauder (200-yard freestyle), Casey Dorcas (400-yard individual medley), Casey Jackson (100-yard backstroke) and Gina Wittman (100-yard breaststroke).
The two schools split the women's two relay events. Fitzpatrick, Klinger and Flynn teamed with sophomore Kate Pringle won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.63. For PLU, Jackson and Wittman joined with Brittany Wolcott and Dayna Blauvelt to win the 200-yard medley in 1:58.80.
In the concluding men's 200-yard freestyle relay, it was Crain and Mesford teaming with Ben Lilley and Rayan Carter winning 1:29.40. The PLU men also won the opening 200-yard medley relay in 1:41.90 thanks to Jones, Carter, Alex Limoges and Nick Symonds.
