WALLA WALLA, Wash. --With brothers Ysbrand Nusse and Jamie Nusse teaming with freshman Chris Bendix to win the 900-yard freestyle relay, the Whitman College swim teams placed third overall at the annual Northwest Conference Relay Meet Saturday at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore.
In combined men's and women's scoring in 15 relay events, including a few mixed events, the University of Puget Sound was first with 544 points. Pacific Lutheran was second with 480 points and Whitman third with 456.
Other points totals are Linfield 442, Pacific 412, Lewis & Clark 372, and Willamette 328.
"We're very pleased overall with our results from today's meet," Whitman swim coach Jenn Blomme said. "The depth of our men's team really showed through, and we had some great relay swims. We don't have as much depth on the women's side, but we had some good swims there also."
The Nusse brothers and Bendix won the 900-yard freestyle in 8:56.31. A trio from Linfield was 13 seconds back in second place.
Bendix and Jamie Nusse also teamed with Noel Sollom-Brotherton to finish second in the 600-yard freestyle in 5:36.64.
In the mixed 400-yard freestyle, the Nusse brothers joined with Chelsea Klinger and Lauren Flynn to take second place in 3:39.60, less than six seconds behind the winning quartet from Puget Sound.
The men's team also got a second-place showing from Bendix, Nick Wood and Chad Trexler in the 300-yard breaststroke with a time of 3:19.17. Trexler, Sollom-Brotherton and Ysbrand Nusse added a third-place effort in the 300-yard backstroke, and Wood teamed with Matt Liedtke and Matt Rowett to take third in the 300-yard medley.
Klinger, Flynn and Katie Tackman placed third in the 600-yard freestyle.
Whitman starts its dual meet season next week, starting at Linfield Friday at 6 p.m. The Missionaries then swim at Pacific at noon Saturday.
