WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Corina Gabbert bounced in a pair of goals, one with her head and one with her left foot, to lift Whitman College to a 2-0 Northwest Conference soccer victory over Pacific University Friday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Defender Kate Newman assisted on both goals by Gabbert, who just missed her second hat trick of the season when one of her shots kicked off the left post late in the second half.
Whitman keeper Courtney Porter made eight saves to post her seventh shutout of the season.
Winning its second straight game in the wake of an injury-plagued four-game losing streak, Whitman moved into fourth place in the NWC standings with an 8-6-1 record (10-7-1). Pacific fell to 4-10-1 and 5-13-1.
Whitman outshot Pacific 11-1 in the first half, but Erin Ichimura made three saves for the Boxers to keep the game scoreless until Gabbert struck with two minutes left before intermission. Taking a pass from Newman, Gabbert swept through the box from right to left and then sent a left-footed shot back to the far post.
It was Gabbert's 12th goal of the season and Newman's first assist.
In the 12th minute of the second half, Newman lofted a pass over the defense and Gabbert headed the ball home from about 10 yards out.
Down 2-0, the Boxers cranked up their offense, outshooting their hosts 9-1 the rest of the way as Whitman settled into a defensive mode. The lone Missionary shot during that stretch came with about 12 minutes left, when Gabbert knocked a ball off the left post. Pacific's Becca Roth nearly scored two minutes later, but her shot bounced off the crossbar.
Gabbert, who has the second most goals in the NWC this season, took 10 of Whitman's 16 shots against Pacific. DeeDee McCormick had four shots.
Cheryl Yasumoto took five shots for Pacific, putting all five on goal. Roth finished with two shots for the Boxers.
The Missionaries close out their season Saturday when they host George Fox at noon. Pacific travels to Spokane, Wash., Saturday for an 11 a.m. season finale at Whitworth.
