CIEE: Taipei Intensive Chinese Language and Culture

 

Through the CIEE: Taipei Intensive Chinese Language and Culture, program based at National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan, students can study Chinese language intensively and learn about this dynamic island nation first hand. The program includes several field trips to places such as the National Palace Museum, temples, porcelain works and local tea plantations. Taiwan is an excellent place to study models of Asian economic development as well as Chinese religious and cultural traditions. The National Chengchi University is located in Mucha, a Taipei suburb at the foot of scenic Mount Chinan.

Fields of study:

Intensive Chinese language course and area studies courses on Taiwan and Chinese culture

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 (Whitman requirement); Two semesters of college-level Mandarin or equivalent required and one Chinese area studies course recommended

Semesters Offered:

Fall, Spring, Academic Year

Calendar:

August –December, February – June

Credits:

16 semester credits - Required Courses:
Intensive Chinese Language - (12 credits)
Chinese Language Practicum (1 credit)
Topics on Modern Taiwanese Culture & Society (3 credits)

Credit Conversion:

1 CIEE credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

University residence hall with Taiwanese roommates

Meals:

Students are responsible for purchasing their own meals and typically eat either at the university cafeterias or at the numerous local restaurants near the campus

Internships:

For academic year students in their second semester with advanced language skills; work with government agencies and NGOs
