Associated Kyoto Program

 

The Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) is an academic year study abroad program sponsored by a consortium of 16 liberal arts colleges including Whitman College. Located on the campus of Doshisha University in downtown Kyoto, AKP offers a rigorous program of intensive Japanese language courses and Japanese area studies courses taught in English by faculty from the member colleges and local scholars. In addition to cultural activities and field trips associated with specific courses, the program offers one overnight trip each semester to places like Hiroshima, Miyajima and Ise. Kyoto is a bustling city of 1.5 million and is renowned for its historic gardens and temples.

Fields of study:

Intensive Japanese language courses and elective courses in areas such as literature, history, economics, religion, and politics

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.  Minimum of one year of college-level Japanese language, one area studies course on Japan and two years’ full-time college credit

Academic Year Only

Calendar:

September – April

Credits:

16 credits per semester - Required Courses:
Intensive Japanese language (8 credits)
Two elective courses (4 credits each)

Housing:

Homestay with a Japanese Family

Meals:

Students take their breakfast and dinner with their host family and are provided with a stipend for lunches.
