Chapman, Nusse Top Swimmers in Prelims

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Passing through the Sunday morning preliminaries with the 15th-best times in their events, Katie Chapman and Jamie Nusse lead a group of at least seven Whitman College swimmers into tonight's finals at the 62nd Annual Husky Invitational Swim Meet in Federal Way, Wash.
Nusse, a senior, advanced in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.54 in the preliminaries. That was 1.34 seconds off his career-best effort.

Nusse will be joined in tonight's consolation finals by junior Mitchell Lee, who was 24th in the prelims in 49.13, and sophomore Paul Chang, who was 26th in 49.24.
Chapman, a sophomore, advanced in the women's 200-yard butterfly in 2:14.46. Mel Notari, a first-year swimmer, was 36th in 2:24.54 and needs at least four scratches to join Chapman in tonight's consolations
Claire Collins, another of Whitman's first-year swimmers, advanced in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:33.07, the morning's 21st-best time.
Missionary senior Lauren Flynn swims tonight in th consolation finals of the 100-yard freestyle. She was 24th in the prelims in 54.37, which left her just one second out of the 12th spot and about one-half second off her school record.
Sophomore Helen Jenne did not advance in the 100 free, although her 55.98 time was her career-best.
Junior Matt Rowett made the consolation finals in the 200-butterfly. He was 24th in the preliminaries in 2:05.55, but senior Chad Trexler needs just a little help to advance in the 200-yard breaststroke. Trexler, who was 34th in the prelims in 2:22.48, needs two scratches to make the final consolation heat.

100-yard freestyle: Rowett, 66th, 51.31; Asao, 69th, 51.41; Dyer, 71st, 51.49; Elliott Crane, 91st, 53.24; and Liedtke, 95th, 54.40.
