WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Peter Valentine, a freshman on the Whitman College baseball team, has been named Northwest Conference Player of the Week.

Valentine, a first baseman and outfielder, hit .368 in four games last weekend against ninth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State, driving home eight runs with three doubles and a triple.

Valentine, who hits from the left side, had at least one RBI and one extra base hit in each game.

On Saturday, in the first of two games that day, Valentine knocked in five runs to help Whitman rally from an early 7-0 deficit. His fifth-inning single plated the first Missionary run, and his three-run triple in the sixth sliced Whitman's deficit to 7-6.

After Eastern Connecticut scored three times to extend its lead, Valentine's RBI-groundout in the eighth made it 10-7.

In Saturday's second game, Valentine rapped an RBI-double and later scored to help Whitman jump in front 3-0. He also singled in the eighth inning.

Valentine played first base in Saturday's two games, recording 23 putouts without an error while picking a handful of throws out of the dirt.

In Friday's opening game of the series, Valentine served as the designated hitter and accounted for Whitman's lone run in a 4-1 loss by drawing a bases-loaded walk. His ninth-inning double was one of just five Missionary hits in the game.

Valentine, who moved to right field for Sunday's series finale, singled to trigger to a three-run third inning that led to a 4-0 Missionary lead.

After Eastern Connecticut tied the game at 4-4, Valentine pushed the Missionaries back in front with a run-scoring double in the sixth inning.

Whitman, which has two dozen first- and second-year players on its decidedly young roster, opens Northwest Conference play this weekend with three more games at Borleske Stadium.

The first of two Saturday games against Puget Sound starts at 11 a.m. Sunday's finale between the two clubs starts at noon.
