WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College steps out of the Northwest Conference baseball wars this weekend for a long non-conference road trip to southern California.
The Missionaries are in Orange, Calif., to face Chapman University, which has stumbled a bit this season after finishing the 2011 season as the NCAA Division III runner-up.
The Panthers, 13-19 on the season, host Whitman for a Saturday twinbill that gets underway at noon. A third and final game is set for 10 a.m. Sunday.
Chapman has dropped seven of its last 10 decisions with five of those losses coming at the hands of two of the top teams in the NWC, Pacific Lutheran and Linfield.
Pacific Lutheran took three of four from Chapman with each of three wins coming by a single run. Linfield split its four-game set with Chapman.
Brian Rauh, Chapman's ace right-hander, beat Linfield earlier this month with a six-hit shut out. He fanned a career-high 16 Wildcats in his nine innings of work.
Rauh, a two-time All-American, led all of Division III last season with 133 strike-outs in 113.2 innings. He has made 10 starts this season, compiling a 5-1 record with a 1.12 earned run average and 91 strike-outs in 72 innings.
After this weekend, Whitman returns to the Northwest to conclude its season with a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29, against Whitworth in Spokane.
